Jess Hawes
Jess Hawes is owner of JJ Hawes, Inc. general building contractor, licensed in California since 1987. he served 28 years in the United States Navy both Active Duty and Naval Reservist until retirement in 2006. Hawes did tours on two navy ships, John Paul Jones DDG 32 (served in the Indian Ocean part of the US 3rd Fleet) , USS Racine LST 1191 and several training and operational commands. I served during Operational Noble Eagle/Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom Theatre from December 28,2002 to July 13, 2003.
Hawes also worked for the civil services for 30 years at several sites including the Long Beach Shipyard where I was trained as an apprentice electrician for 4 years and over 12 years as a journeyman. He worked for the Army Corps of Engineers for the Tulas District in Oklahoma for 4 years as an electrician inspecting Dams and Navigational Locks for cargo passage. Hawes relocated back to San Diego CA in 2000 working at the Marine Corps Depot for over 16 months before transferring to work for the US Border Patrol (Homeland Security) San Diego County District as an electrician all over San Diego County. He worked on various Power Distribution Centers, Border Lightings, Standby Power Generators, Border Checkpoints and Building Maintenance and retired in 2008.
Hawes started his construction business in 2006 after retiring from the navy and was a sole proprietor until incorporating in August 2008 renaming his company from Hawes Construction to JJ Hawes, Inc. He has worked on many projects in the City of San Diego. Most notable projects include the San Diego International Air-Port Terminal II Expansion, San Diego Community College District, San Diego Unified School District, SDG&E and several commercial buildings and residential projects.
He is a member of the National Black Contractors Association (NBCA) since 2008, Board Member of the Black Contractors Association (BCA) Intercity Unilateral Apprenticeship Program, San City College Adjunct BCA apprenticeship Instructor and Vice President of Equality Construction Council (ECC).
